WHILE the San Miguel Beermen and TNT KaTropa facing in the finals of a Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) tournament after six years has some “oddness” to it, still there is no denying that the two deserve to face in the championship of the 2017 Commissioner’s Cup and should be counted on to give an exciting series, one local basketball analyst said.

Set to begin tomorrow at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, the Beermen and KaTropa reengage in the finals since the 2011 Governors’ Cup with all arrows pointing to a competitive series considering how both teams made their way to the “Big Dance.”

THE TNT KaTropa wrested the early lead in their best-of-seven Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup finals with the San Miguel Beermen, taking Game One, 104-102, last night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Bucking an early breakaway by the Beermen, the KaTropa charged back and took the fight to their opponents and succeeded, with hurting import Joshua Smith taking the hero’s role, to move a step forward toward the title of the PBA’s midseason tournament.

ROGER Pogoy may only be a rookie, but the young TNT wingman plays with the confidence of a veteran.

The 6-2 former Far Eastern University showed just that on Sunday, firing 17 points, none bigger than his three-point shot with under two minutes left to help TNT KaTropa beat a rallying Barangay Ginebra side, 100-94 in the opening game of their PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinal series.

A deadly gunner, whose confidence grew further with his recent stints at Gilas, Pogoy’s heads-up play earned him the PBA Press Corps Player of the Week for the period of June 6-11.
