NEW YORK – Some of the best movies don't finish with happy endings — such is the story for Miguel Cotto's boxing career on Saturday night.

Three years after stopping heavily favored Luis Abregu in Atlantic City, the Brooklyn native ruined Miguel Cotto’s farewell fight by upsetting the Puerto Rican legend in their 154-pound championship match at Madison Square Garden. Ali, who moved up from welterweight to super welterweight to challenge Cotto, hurt Cotto in the second and fourth rounds, came back from some trouble in the middle rounds and won the final four rounds on all three scorecards to earn a unanimous decision.

Anthony Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn was amused by Deontay Wilder’s request of a 50-50 split of the revenue for a unification fight against Anthony Joshua in 2018. Hearn says he was “speechless” after hearing of Wilder’s wish for an even split of the money for the Joshua fight.

Hearn believes Wilder must have been joking when he made the request. Hearn sees Wilder’s request as a starting point for the negotiations, but obviously he’s not going to get that split.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) might not be facing Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) next year on May 5, says Golden Boy Promotions boss Oscar De La Hoya. He says there are still other options out there that they’re considering in Daniel Jacobs and the winner of the Billy Joe Saunders vs. David Lemieux fight.

De La Hoya says Canelo will decide when they sit down and talk in the next few weeks. Canelo is the one that will be making the choice of who he wants. On one hand, De La Hoya says it’s up to the boxing public to decide who Canelo fights next, but on the other, he says it’s up to him. In other words, Canelo could elect to go against the wishes of the boxing public if they decide they want to see him face Golovkin in a rematch.
