I hate that I love this Tyron Woodley vs. Nick Diaz title talk

After a changing of the guard in the UFC’s welterweight division, Tyron Woodley is the new 170-pound champion.

Who does it make most that Woodley (16-3 MMA, 6-2 UFC) fight in his first title defense? How about Stephen Thompson (13-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC), who has won seven straight and was presumed to be the next challenger going into UFC 201, where Woodley knocked out Robbie Lawler? Or how about Lawler (27-11 MMA, 12-5 UFC) in a rematch?

Well, Woodley is very much “meh” on both of those fights – and instead, immediately after the fight, made a case for title fights against either Georges St-Pierre (23-2 MMA 19-2 UFC), who has been retired since 2013, or Nick Diaz (26-9 MMA, 7-6 UFC), who just came off an 18-month drug suspension and hasn’t won a fight since 2011.

In the latest edition of The Speed Bag, MMAjunkie columnist Ben Fowlkes talks about why a fight between Woodley and Diaz, in particular, makes no kind of sense … and why he’d still be lining up to watch it, anyway – just like you would.
