Mikey Garcia’s trainer Robert Garcia took issue with Vasyl Lomachenko and his promoter Todd Duboef of Top Rank saying that they weren’t impressed with Mikey’s performance last Saturday night against Adrien “The Problem” Broner.
There’s something painful about watching a boxer fight long past their prime, but it’s also many times inevitable. Money doesn’t grow on trees and fighters fight until they can’t anymore. Sometimes they go out on their shield figuratively, and sometimes, like Bernard Hopkins, they literally go out on their head.
Seeing a great fighter get worked over by someone he would have beat in his prime recalls Rose Louis’s comments about watching her husband Joe wrestling. “It was like seeing President Eisenhower washing dishes.”
In a disappointing fight, unbeaten former IBF junior middleweight champion Jermall Charlo (26-0, 20 KOs) destroyed an injured #1 WBC Jorge Sebastian Heiland (29-5-2, 16 KOs) by a 4h round knockout in a WBC title eliminator on Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. It was disappointing because Heiland appeared injured before the fight even started.
Unbeaten Mikey Garcia (37-0, 30 KOs) says he’d take a fight against WBA/WBC welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (28-0, 22 KOs) if the boxing fans and the networks want to see the fight.
Saul Canelo Alvarez will have his Ring Magazine middleweight title up for grabs in his fight against middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in 2 months from now on September 16. Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) will put up his IBF and WBA middleweight belts. Canelo doesn’t want any part in fighting for Golovkin’s WBC belt.
That belt will fall vacant should GGG lose to Canelo (49-1-1, 34 KOs. The winner of the Canelo-Triple G fight will be viewed as the best fighter in the 160 lb. division. Triple G’s WBC belt will become vacant if he loses to Canelo. It won’t go to Canelo, because he doesn’t want the belt.
Fighting for the first time in 15 months, former welterweight world title holder Victor Ortiz (32-6-2, 25 KOs) destroyed journeyman Saul Corral (25-10, 16 KOs) in the 4th round of a scheduled 10 round fight on Sunday night on Premier Boxing Champions on FS1 at the Robobank Theater in Bakersfield, California.
Zou Shiming’s experiment of promoting himself didn’t go to plan, as he was knocked out in the 11th round Friday by obscure Japanese underdog Sho Kimura at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center in China.
Zou, who had parlayed his Olympic gold medals from Beijing and London into professional success, was fighting for the first time without promoter Top Rank and trainer Freddie Roach. As the main eventer making his first defense of the WBO flyweight title, and promoter alongside his wife Ran Yingying, and Chinese news outlets reporting that Zou was rumored to not have a full-time trainer, Zou had a lot on his plate.
Garcia (37-0, 30 Kos) won a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision victory over a weight drained looking former four division world champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner (33-3, 24 KOs) on Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Garcia, 29, appeared to win every round. The judges scored the fight 116-112, 117-111 and 116-112. Boxing News 24 scored it 120-108 for Mikey. The only round in which Broner fought well enough to possibly win was round 10. Even in that round, Garcia landed the heavier shots and got the better of Broner.
