University of the Philippines staved off pesky Far Eastern University, 73-67, in the UAAP Season 85 men's basketball tournament, Saturday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Carl Tamayo took over again down the stretch, going on a personal 4-1 spurt to stretch a precarious one-point edge to a 70-65 lead with 2:05 left.

Ateneo used its patented third quarter run to beat National University, 77-60, and gain a piece of the early lead Wednesday night in the UAAP Season 85 men's basketball tournament at the Philsports Arena.

The Blue Eagles opened a 60-45 advantage at the end of the third period and led as much as 22 points the rest of the way to improve to 2-0 in the young season.

DE LA SALLE held University of Santo Tomas main gunner Nic Cabañero to 10 points in a 83-63 victory Wednesday night in the UAAP Season 85 men's basketball tournament at the Philsports Arena.

Schonny Winston had 19 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals, CJ Austria scored 13 points while Mike Phillips and Kevin Quiambao each scored 11 points for the Green Archers. Phillips also pulled down 11 rebounds.

University of the Philippines bounced back from a demoralizing loss against De La Salle University by taking a 64-56 win over host Adamson University in the UAAP Season 85 Women's Basketball Tournament, Wednesday at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Espana, Manila.

The win is the Fighting Maroons' first against the Lady Falcons since Bea Daez and company barged into the win column of Season 78 to start a four-game winning run.

Adamson University entered the win column after overpowering University of the East, 74-61, in the UAAP Season 85 men's basketball tournament, Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Soaring Falcons turned a 49-45 small lead into a 65-51 advantage with 4:32 left in the game, thanks to a 16-5 rally capped by Lenda Douanga's back-to-back paint conversions.

"Scrappy (win) for sure which is nothing new for the first UAAP game of the season I think that's the standard line for most coaches," said Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin.

Defending champion University of the Philippines needed to dig deep to dispose of De La Salle University, 72-69, in the UAAP Season 85 men's basketball opener, Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Trailing by three, Kevin Quiambao, who has been struggling all night, drilled a trey to put La Salle within two with 1:36 to go, 64-66 but Carl Tamayo and James Spencer answered back with four straight points to put UP ahead, 70-64, with 16 seconds left.

Nic Cabañero unleashed 33 points to give University of Santo Tomas a 69-60 squeaker over Adamson University in the UAAP Season 85 men's basketball tournament opener at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday.

Jerom Lastimosa pulled the Soaring Falcons back within three after a triple with 56.4 seconds left in the match, 60-63.

Philippine Sports Commission chairman Noli Eala reassured his organization's support for the UAAP in a meeting with the league's Executive Director Atty. Rebo Saguisag and Season 85 President Fr. Aldrin Suan, CM, in a courtesy call, Thursday at the PSC Chairman's Office in Malate, Manila.

Eala expressed his support to the league with its thrust to have a full calendar for the upcoming season.
