OTTAWA – Justin Trudeau says he’s paying attention to the growing dissent over his government’s controversial plan to eliminate tax incentives that he insists only benefit wealthy small business owners.

But the prime minister said Friday he “will make no apologies” for the Liberal government’s commitment to helping the so-called middle class, even at the expense of the wealthiest Canadians.

Doctors are warning that the Liberal government's proposed changes to the small business tax regime could force female physicians to leave the profession, and some have travelled to the national Liberal caucus meeting to turn up the heat on skittish MPs.

Dr. Gigi Osler, the newly elected president of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA), hosted a roundtable with doctors in Kelowna, B.C., on Tuesday at the same hotel where the Liberal caucus will meet this week, a clear message from doctors who say they won't stand for these changes.

Some of Canada's biggest universities are beginning the new school year with a record number of international students on campus.

The steady upswing in foreign applicants began several years ago, then started to spike after the U.S. presidential election in 2016. The challenge for the federal government now is to maintain that trend amid competing countries, and to encourage more from the talented pool to stay on as permanent residents.

The University of Toronto, Canada's top draw for international students, enrolled 17,452 international students in undergraduate and graduate programs last year, making up about 20 per cent of the overall student body.

Hundreds of people in Alberta and B.C. took to social media to report seeing a giant fireball illuminate the night sky late Monday, and the RCMP told media it received dozens of calls about what seemed to be the same event. 

Posting to Twitter from locations as far apart as Calgary and Hornby Island, B.C., the amazed stargazers described seeing a flaming object turn the sky an eerie green before fading into a dark orange as it approached the horizon.

When someone drinks too much, we call it alcohol poisoning. 

When someone takes too much of a drug, we call it an overdose. 

The difference in language may seem slight, but it says a lot about how our society differentiates between alcohol users and drug users. 

If we speak about the crisis in a more clinical, straightforward fashion, we can see it for what it is: a public health issue that can be addressed through the medical system.

A shooting in Abbotsford on Thursday evening has left one man dead, according to police.

The dead man was found near the intersection of Gladwin and Huntingdon roads after officers responded to reports of shots fired at about 6 p.m., an Abbotsford police press release said.
