There will be no provincial charges for a tailings dam collapse in British Columbia but the province's new environment minister says a mining company may still be held responsible through federal laws.

George Heyman said Wednesday the August 2014 disaster has had tremendous economic and environmental consequences and British Columbians deserve to know what went wrong at the Mount Polley mine located in the province's Interior.

An evacuation alert has been issued to 51 properties in the Island Pond area in B.C.'s East Kootenay region due to a wildfire burning nearby.

The wildfire broke out  12 kilometres south of Canal Flats on Sunday after a tree fell onto a power line. As of late Monday night, it was estimated to be 150 hectares in size and was zero per cent contained.

RCMP are investigating after a 16-year-old from Pennsylvania died after an apparent drowning at North Vancouver's Lynn Canyon Park Friday afternoon.

Const. Brett Cunningham with North Vancouver RCMP says the teen was swimming with friends around 4 p.m. when he ran into trouble.

The group was in the water near Twin Falls, a popular swimming spot.  Police say there are signs posted to discourage people from swimming in the area because of the fast-moving water.

A Saskatchewan family desperate to find their missing daughter, believed to be in the Pacific Northwest, is hopeful a new powerful resource involved in their search will finally help lead them to her.

The American National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, or NCMEC, has been disseminating information about 18-year-old Mekayla Bali, who was last seen in Yorkton, Sask., in April 2016.
