BALIPURE seeks to firm up its semifinal bid as it goes up against a struggling Creamline side today even as the Power Smashers step up their own drive in the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.

The Water Defenders checked an impending skid and subdued the Perlas Spikers in five at the Philsports Arena last Sunday, grabbing the lead at 6-2 heading to the crucial stretch of the double-round elimination of the season-opening conference of the league organized by Sports Vision.

Bacolod Tay Tung High School overcame 4 days of tough competitions as it outplayed visiting Ateneo de Cebu yesterday: 25-4, 22-25, 25-6 and 25-15 to capture the 3rd JGM Finance Corporation U17 Volleyball Tournament at the Bacolod Tay Tung High School covered court.

Gaining the momentum from a dominating first set, the Thunderbolts never gave their Cebuana counterparts any chance to catch up as they took the game in 4 sets of the 5-set finals.

The Perlas Spikers charged back late in the first two sets then dominated the third to fashion out a 27-25, 26-24, 25-19 victory over the Power Smashers and bolster their semifinal drive in the Premier Volleyball League at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan on Saturday.

Import Rupia Inck put on a superb all-around game of 14 kills, three blocks and two aces while Japanese playmaker produced 25 excellent sets and finished with six hits as the Spikers finished off the Power Smashers in 75 minutes.

UP 1-0 in their best-of-three UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball finals series, the defending champions De La Salle Lady Spikers look to end things against rivals Ateneo Lady Eagles in Game Two tomorrow.

Following a dig-deep performance in the series opener last Tuesday that saw them overcome being a set down to claim the win in four sets, 21-25, 29-27, 25-22 and 25-20, the Taft-based Lady Spikers said that they will try to make the second game “their last game of the season” and secure for the school its 10th women’s volleyball title in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), and fourth in the last six years.

Following its successful staging last year, the 3rd JGM Finance Corporation U17 Volleyball Tournament drawn eight secondary schools in the Visayas Region competing in the 4-day event set May 18-21 at the Bacolod Tay Tung High School covered court.

Among the teams seeing action are Ateneo de Cebu, Ateneo de Iloilo, University of St. La Salle-Bacolod, Trinity Christian School, Colegio San Agustin Bacolod, Bata National High School and Tay Tung Thunderbolts Teams A and B.

THE defending champions De La Salle Lady Spikers finally broke free from the stranglehold of rivals Ateneo Lady Eagles in UAAP Season 79, taking Game One of their best-of-three finals series yesterday in four sets, 21-25, 29-27, 25-22 and 25-20.

Beaten by their Katipunan-based foes twice already in the ongoing season of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), the Lady Spikers made sure it would not fall a third straight time to the Lady Eagles in the series opener while moving a step closer to repeating as UAAP champs.

Zenaida Ybanez-Chavez, Rosemarie Molit-Prochina, Joanne Tavera-Tomacruz, Arlene Apostol-Ladimo, Grace Antigua, Jan Buquid, Nory Laroza, and other legends of the game who won gold medals in the Southeast Asian Games were all invited to grace this one-day battle that serves as the final tryouts for members of the men’s and women’s national teams.

FOR the sixth straight year, the finals of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) women’s volleyball tournament will be a blue-and-green affair with the Ateneo Lady Eagles and De La Salle Lady Spikers getting it on, beginning today in Game One of their best-of-three championship series.

Set for 4 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, the top two teams in UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball try to take an early series advantage and move one step closer to claiming another title.
