NBA trade news continues to make the headline during the offseason with teams getting ready to return to training camp next month. Here’s all the latest basketball news from around the league.
LeBron James contacted Kevin Durant
Kevin Durant is reportedly open to discussions over a possible move to the Los Angeles Lakers next summer to team up with LeBron James, according to Fox Sports’ Skip Bayless.
Durant signed a contract extension with the Golden State Warriors this summer worth a reported $30m – but the newly-signed deal will allow the reigning Finals MVP to opt out and test the open market once again next year.
James, meanwhile, signed a four-year deal with the Lakers worth $154m after leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers for the second time in his career.
Speaking on yesterday’s edition of Undisputed, NBA expert Skip Bayless suggested that help could be on the way next summer with Durant expected to give serious consideration to the thought of heading south along the coast to join James in Los Angeles.
“I was told by a source very close to Kevin that LeBron did check in with him this year because he was free, he was a free agent,” Bayless said.
“I was also told that Kevin is open to listening next year depending on what happens.
"What will the Lakers look like with LeBron? What will it play like? What will it feel like? It could be a disaster.
“Will DeMarcus Cousins work or not work in Golden State? I don’t know. Will they fall apart because DeMarcus Cousins can’t find a place?”
Kawhi Leonard keeping ‘open mind’
Kawhi Leonard has reportedly chosen to give Toronto Raptors a shot at keeping him before making a decision on his future next summer.
Leonard will be playing his basketball in Toronto for next season after he was traded by the San Antonio Spurs in a deal centred around DeMar DeRozan heading the other way.
The Lakers were thought to be Leonard’s preferred destination and many suggest he will likely only be in Toronto for a year before he can choose where he goes in free agency next summer.
However, San Antonio Express-News reporter Jabari Young said during a recent radio appearance that Leonard is keeping an "open mind" about the Raptors heading into his first season with the team.
"Based off of me talking to people within his circle, they're going to go into this thing with an open mind and give this thing every last opportunity to work,” Young said.
“And at the end of the day, if that's the case, it would be great if he stays.
“Obviously, I think part of his mind, yes, let's keep it real: I think he still feels like L.A. might be the destination, but the same time, he plans to go into this thing with an open mind, giving it every single shot in the world to make it work."
Paul George hint
Paul George has hinted he may eventually sign with the Lakers.
The small forward snubbed LA this summer, opting to sign a four-year, $137m deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
However, George admits he could join the Lakers after his time in Oklahoma.
He said: “I wanted to, man. Honestly, I wanted to. I wanted to come back home (in 2017). I’m 28; still got another contract.”
