Fide Master David Elorta, Oscar Joseph Cantela, Francheska Largo and Fide Master Narquingden "Arden" Reyes shared the limelight in the just concluded 1st Eugene Torre Chess Cup - SEA Games Luzon Qualifying Leg 2019 late Sunday held at the Mapua University Gymnasium in Muralla Street, Intramuros, Manila.

Elorta turned back United States master Jose "Jojo" Aquino Jr. in the ninth and final round to captured the Open Rapid chess title plus top prize P30,000 and an elegant trophy, hosted by Mapua Filipino-Chinese Alumni Association in close cooperation with National Association of Mapua Alumni (NAMA) and National Chess Federation of the Philippines.

Actually, Elorta, University of Sto. Tomas coach International Master Ronald Dableo and Ateneo de Manila University coach International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia finished in a three-way tie for first with 8 points, but the former (Elorta) took the title with a higher tie break points.

Oscar Joseph Cantela bested fellow co-leader Cyrus James Damiray in the final canto to topped the Elementary Division. Gladmir Chester Romero and Al-Basher Buto hurdle their respective opponents to share 2nd to 3rd placers with 7.5 points apiece. Romero toppled April Joy Claros while Buto, the pride of Faith Christian School in Cainta, Rizal nipped Lemmuel Jay Adena.

Francheska Largo took the High School title with a superior quotient over fellow 7.5 pointers John Kenneth Gelua and Francis Roi Parro.

Fide Master Narquingden "Arden" Reyes, a PLDT Home Sales and Sevice Center Management employee under supervisor Trina Escueta won the Open Blitz division with 6.5 points after seven games of play. Also with 6.5 points are 2nd placer Fide Master Mari Joseph Turqueza and 3rd placer United States Master Jose "Jojo" Aquino Jr., playing under the banner of National University team manager Samson Go.-Marlon Bernardino-
