Defending champion University of Santo Tomas remained undefeated after a 3.5-0.5 victory over De La Salle University in Round 3 of the UAAP Men's Chess Championship Season 86 at the FEU Tech Gym in Manila on Saturday.
The Tiger Woodpushers continued to lead the standings with six match points, thanks to three consecutive wins, putting them two match points ahead of second-place Ateneo de Manila University.
UST displayed its strength as Melito Ocsan Jr. (Board 2), Chester Reyes (Board 3), and Julius Gonzales (Board 4) all secured three wins in as many matches.
In Round 3, Ocsan [3/3] handed Daniel Lemi [2/3] his first loss after emerging victorious in a 50-move bishop endgame, while Reyes [3/3] earned a full point over Francis Guimalan [1/2] after a 62-move knight endgame.
Gonzales, the Season 86 MVP, also claimed his third win in as many matches by outmaneuvering Diomel Escutin [0/1] in the endgame. Cyril Telesforo [2/3] prevented a shutout loss for the Green Woodpushers by forcing a draw with FIDE Master Christian Mark Daluz [2/3] on Board 1.
Meanwhile, Ateneo secured its second consecutive victory with a 2.5-1.5 outcome against Far Eastern University, securing second place.
Paul Llanillo [1/1] and Janmyl Tisado's [2/3] victories over Hans Olorosisimo [0.5/3] and Arena International Master Jarvey Labanda [0/1] on Boards 1 and 4, respectively, led Ateneo's attack in Round 3.
Jasper Faeldonia [2/3] secured the win for Ateneo by sharing the point with FIDE Master Jeth Romy Morado [2/3] on Board 2.
Christian Olaybal [3/3] secured FEU's only victory in Round 3 by defeating Christopher Kis-ing [0.5/3] on Board 3.
University of the Philippines also entered the win column with a dominant 4-0 win over Adamson University, securing the third spot in the standings.
FIDE Master Stephen Rome Pangilinan [2/3] (Board 1), Arena International Master Cyrus Francisco [1.5/3] (Board 2), Melson Gallo [1.5/2] (Board 3), and Joshov Rosarda [1/2] (Board 4) all notched wins against Arena FIDE Master Alfonzo Olendo [0.5/3], John Rocel Simon [0/3], Jolan Ballobar [0/3], and Matt Joseph Ramos [1/3], respectively.
Round 4 is scheduled for Sunday, October 22.

Far Eastern University maintained its momentum and secured its third win in as many matches with a 2.5-1.5 victory over Adamson University in Round 3 of the UAAP Season 86 Women’s Chess Championships at the FEU Tech Gym in Manila on Saturday.
The Lady Tamaraws solidified their hold on the top spot as they improved to six match points due to their undefeated streak. University of the Philippines (four match points) and defending champion National University (three match points) currently hold the second and third positions, respectively.
In Board 3, Woman National Master Mhage Sebastian [2.5/3] capitalized on Jashua Patria's [0.5/3] shaky middlegame play, going a piece up and forcing resignation after the 42nd move, leading to an unstoppable checkmate by move 43 to kickstart FEU's third straight win.
Shaina Romanillos [1/1] followed suit with a victory in just 20 moves of the Modern Defense, playing the black pieces against AdU's Christine Hernandez [0/1] on Board 4.
Queenie Samarita [2.5/3] stopped the bleeding for the Lady Falcons as she scored a win by resignation on Board 2 over Woman National Master Mary Tan [2/3], but Woman National Master Vic Glysen Derotas [2.5/3] preserved the win for FEU as she settled for a draw with Robelle de Jesus [1/3] on the top board.
On the other hand, the University of the Philippines moved up to the second position after a 2-2 draw against De La Salle University, as NU took a bye in Round 3.
Geraldine Guyo [1/2] secured the lone win for UP on Board 4, prevailing over Rinoa Sadel [0/2], while Jerlyn San Diego [2/3] and Jallen Agra [1.5/3] shared the points with Checy Telesforo [1/2] and Arena FIDE Master Sara Olendo [1.5/2] on Board 1 and 3, respectively.
DLSU's Francois Magpily [1.5/2] completed the deuce with a victory over erstwhile undefeated Precious Ferrer [1.5/3] on Board 2.
University of Santo Tomas achieved its first win this season, posting a 2.5-1.5 victory over Ateneo de Manila University.
Princes Oncita [1/3] and Rohanisah Buto [2/3] each secured a win over Kristine Flores [0.5/2] and Alphecca Gonzales [1/2] on Board 3 and 4, respectively, before Josemier Panol [1/3] split the point with Ma. Elayza Villa [0.5/1] on Board 2 to secure UST's triumph.
Jiessel Marino [1/2] delivered the lone win for Ateneo with a victory on Board 1 over Joannah Olay [0/2].
Round 4 will begin on Sunday, October 22.

Far Eastern University - Diliman's Boys Chess Team continued to dominate while National University Nazareth School took over the top spot in the girls' division of the UAAP Season 86 Chess Championships at the FEU Tech Gym in Manila on Saturday.
Defending champions Baby Tamaraws remained undefeated after three matches, showcasing their dominance with a second shutout victory, this time against De La Salle Zobel.
Jerish Velarde [3/3] led the charge for FEU-D, earning a point while playing with the black pieces after 39 moves of the Caro-Kann Defense against Tyrhone Tabernilla [1/2] on Board 1. Oscar Cantela [3/3] also maintained his perfect record, securing a point through checkmate in 32 moves on Board 2 against Gian Caguiat [0/1].
Arena FIDE Master Ritchie Abeleda [1/1] and Zeus Paglinawan [1/1] completed the rout as the debuting duo secured wins over Michael Dogelio [0/2] and Paolo De Vera [0/2] on Board 3 and 4, respectively.
The University of Santo Tomas also earned its second straight victory with a 4-0 dismantling of Ateneo High School, securing the second spot in the standings.
Karlycris Clarito Jr [2/2], Oshrie Reyes [1.5/2], Al-Basher Buto [2/2], and Jian Rivera [1/1] all notched wins on Board 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively, against Bryan Magugat [0/3], Arena Candidate Master Radamanthus Batnag [1/2], Luis Gutierrez [1/3], and Arena FIDE Master Ronell Co [0/2].
In the girls' division, NUNS claimed the solo lead after Round 3 with a 4-0 victory over DLSZ, while defending champion FEU-D settled for a draw with UST.
Lexie Hernandez [1.5/2] ignited NUNS's supremacy with a win over Fiorela Marinduque [0/2] on Board 1.
Sara Dalagan [2/2], Heart Padilla [2/2], and Yana De Vera [1/2] concluded the dominating conquest by securing a point each with victories against Francesca Icay [0/3], Zuri Navarro [0/2], and Ayana Montes [0/2] on Board 2, 3, and 4, respectively.
UST, on the other hand, settled for a 2-2 split with FEU-D to take the second place after Round 3.
Nathalie Liscano [3/3] and Christine Tabungar [2/2] scored impressive wins over FEU-D's Woman National Masters April Joy Claros [0/2] and Bonjoure Suyamin [1/2] on Board 3 and 4, respectively.
Woman National Master Ruelle Canino [2/2] (Board 1) and Woman National Master Samantha Umayan [2/2] (Board 2) tallied a point each by conquering UST's Precious Yecla [1.5/3] and Marjeri Janapin [0/2], respectively, to complete the split.
