'Just appalling': RCMP search for witnesses after fights break out in Okanagan

RCMP are looking for witnesses after a series of violent fist fights broke out outside a nightclub in Vernon, B.C., over the weekend.

A statement said the scuffle started after a concert at the Status Nightclub on Saturday. Cpl. Dan Moskaluk said "several" men started fighting on the sidewalk just before 1 a.m.

Cameron Klim said he was outside the venue when people started throwing punches. He shot video of the incident which, at one point, shows one man being kicked in the head as he lies on the pavement.

Klim told CBC News he sent the video to a friend around 3 a.m., not realizing "how serious" the incident was. That friend posted the footage on social media, where it was shared thousands of times.

The next day, Klim — who'd been drinking that night — said he sobered up and took a second look.

"I watched it again and was like 'Whoa, this is insane,'" he said.

After that, Klim handed the footage over to the RCMP and his friend removed his online post.

'Kind of mind-blowing'

Klim said he's not sure what led to the brawl.

"It started with a one-on-one fight and by the time I got the camera out, it just erupted into what you see in the video," he said. "I think it had nothing to do with the show itself — I'm thinking it was personal issues."

Klim, who is originally from the Okanagan, said he's never seen that "severity" of violence in his hometown.

"Things like this don't usually happen in Vernon. It's just appalling and kind of mind-blowing."

A 20-year-old man was hospitalized with a cut to his face as a result of the fighting. An RCMP statement said he was taken into custody after receiving treatment and released the next morning.

Moskaluk said an investigation is underway. Anyone with information or who witnessed the fight is asked to call RCMP at (250) 545-7171 or Crime Stoppers for those wishing to remain anonymous.
