A parent in B.C.'s Slocan Valley is fighting to omit their child's sex on their birth certificate as part of a broader effort to keep gender from being included on government documents. 

Kori Doty gave birth to Searyl Atli at a friend's home last November. Doti, a non-binary trans parent who doesn't identify as either male or female, (and prefers to use the pronoun they), wants to keep Searyl's gender off all official records.

After a long, snowy winter, Vancouverites took to social media on Saturday, basking in the first real heat wave of the summer.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement on Friday, calling for temperatures in the mid-to-high 20s around the Lower Mainland, with temperatures nearing 30 C in the Fraser Valley.

After a CBC iTeam investigation revealed that a Saskatchewan business owner was offered cash in exchange for a job offer to a Chinese national, three other people have come forward to report similar experiences.

Last week, CBC reported that Barb Reid, owner of a Fabricland in Prince Albert, had been approached by a representative of a Vancouver-based immigration consulting firm.

Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale says the looming retirement of RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson is as good a time as any to consider rejigging the governance of the force, including the outstanding recommendation to set up a civilian oversight body.

"The change in command is an opportunity to examine all dimensions of governance and structure. The new commissioner will have important challenges to address in terms of maintaining the tradition and heritage of the force and at the same time acknowledging all of the new things that modern day policing requires," Goodale said in an interview with Chris Hall, host of CBC Radio's The House.

Surrey RCMP says two men are in hospital with gunshot wounds after a daytime shooting in a residential area along the 15300 block of 86 Avenue.

Officers say shots were heard around 3 p.m. PT on Sunday while witnesses say the gunfire was exchanged between people in a car and a pick-up truck.

Police later found two injured men in hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A large fire in Vancouver's Kerrisdale neighbourhood has destroyed a number of businesses.

The fire, centred around a one-storey strip of commercial businesses at the northwest corner of Maple Street and 41st Avenue, began around 8 p.m. on Thursday.

No one was injured in the fire, but six businesses have been affected. As of 1:30 a.m., the fire was still burning.
