Vancouver Police are cautioning the public after a series of debit card thefts and frauds targeting intoxicated people at night in the Granville Entertainment District.

So far nine incidents have been reported, involving thousands of dollars, yet investigators believe more have occurred. 

Suspects are reportedly looking over the shoulders of people who are withdrawing money from ATM machines, and stealing their personal identification numbers. 

According to police, the thieves switch people's debit cards with expired ones after they finish their transaction. Then, they use the cards to withdraw money from the person's bank account. 

"Awareness is always your best defense," says VPD spokesperson Sgt. Jason Robillard.

"Look around you and see if someone is standing close enough to see your pin. Move close to the ATM and use your body or hand to block prying eyes."

Prevention tips from police

Be aware of your surroundings — if you feel unsafe and if someone suspicious is loitering around the ATM, leave immediately.

If you are planning a night out with drinking, consider withdrawing cash prior to going out and not late at night when you are intoxicated.

Don't accept "help" or allow anyone to interfere with your transaction.

Consider lowering your daily withdrawal limit.

Monitor your banking transactions regularly and report any suspicious activity to your bank immediately.
