Prince Philip is retiring. The 95-year-old Duke of Edinburgh announced via Buckingham Palace on Thursday that he will no longer carry out public engagements starting this fall.
“In taking this decision, The Duke has the full support of the Queen,” the statement from Buckingham Palace reads.
Queen Elizabeth will continue with her royal duties and engagements, and Prince Philip could still attend events from time to time.
Elizabeth turned 91 last month, and Prince Philip will be turning 96 in June.
Rumors first started swirling online early Thursday morning when several British publications claimed that Queen Elizabeth had called an emergency meeting at 3 a.m. Many were concerned that a senior royal was ill and a French publication even falsely reported that Prince Philip had passed away.
Philip attended an event at the London cricket club on Wednesday and will continue to participate in royal events through August.
