At least 20 injured in California quake

Police and fire officials say at least 20 people have sustained minor injuries in an earthquake that hit the US state of California on Thursday.

The magnitude 6.4 quake struck about 200 kilometers northeast of Los Angeles at around 10:30 a.m.

Officials say several fires were reported in Ridgecrest City, near the epicenter of the quake. They say patients had to be evacuated from a hospital there.

A state of emergency has been declared in the city as aftershocks continue. Police and city officials are assessing the damage.

The quake broke water pipes near Los Angeles. The city's main airport says flight operations are unaffected.
