VICE President Leni Robredo recently sat down with community leaders and residents to discuss how to improve their livelihoods during a visit to the towns of Hernani and Salcedo in Eastern Samar.

In her visit to Canhugas Nature Park, Barangay 2 Poblacion in Hernani, Robredo met with fisherfolk, tricycle drivers, and sari-sari store owners to discuss the various problems faced by the community. Lack of sufficient livelihood was the main issue raised, despite the community’s proximity to a possible tourist spot.

Las Piñas Mayor Imelda Aguilar has ordered police and barangay officials to enforce the city’s curfew ordinance, particularly on minors to ensure their protection and promote social order.

Aguilar’s directive came in the wake of rape incidents and killing of minors across Metro Manila.

“We must not compromise the welfare and safety of our children since it is our obligation as parents and public servants to protect them from any threat or harm,” the mayor said.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few years, I don’t need to tell you that podcasts are the new cool. As a self-proclaimed podcast nerd, I spend more hours every day listening than reading. There’s a podcast for almost everything under the sun, but if you’ve just hopped onto the podcast wagon — like me a year ago — it can be difficult to decide what to listen to. Here are some of my favorites.

It could have been fatal. But authorities — who’ve arrested an 18-year-old in connection with yesterday’s attack — say the crude bomb on a London subway train did not explode as intended. Witnesses described a bang and fireball, which apparently caused burns and a panic that brought the incident’s total injuries to 29.

Efrain Oliveros wants to show what he keeps tucked deep in his wallet for good luck as he motors around the hills of Buenos Aires, a gold-mining town in the Cauca Department of western Colombia. He carefully unwraps a baggy to reveal a tiny flake of green gold mined with a simple process — scooping up streambed gravel with a wooden pan and sifting it to reveal the precious metal. Until about 10 years ago, all gold was mined in this age-old way in Cauca, says the 27-year-old social activist, who asked that his real name not be used because of the frequency of attacks on advocates by armed groups in Colombia.

BDO Unibank continued to serve people affected by the armed conflict in Marawi City through various corporate citizenship initiatives. The largest bank in the Philippines recently joined other companies in providing financial assistance to the families of at least 100 soldiers and police personnel killed in the Marawi siege.

Facilitated by BDO Foundation, the bank’s P2-million donation was turned over to the families in an event in Malacañan Palace.

A single tone is ringing out throughout the convention center. It’s so pure and constant that, as we ascend the escalators to the main hall, it’s not clear whether it’s just the building’s background hum, or perhaps a residual ringing in my ears. Suddenly it stops, then restarts at a slightly higher pitch. “Is that the organ?!” I ask our guide. Of course it is. The instrument, which is being readied for a recital the following morning, “almost constantly” needs tuning, he says, because of “ever-changing climates” inside the giant hall. When the doors swing open to the cavernous main auditorium, the background tone becomes a note that fills the air and the ears of everyone inside it.
