First prosecution under Finn’s Law after police dog stabbed in head

A man is believed to be the first person to face charges under a new law designed to protect service animals. Audi was stabbed in the side of the head during a call-out in which an officer was also injured in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire.

Dan O’Sullivan, 29, from Liverpool, was taken into custody and charged with causing unnecessary suffering to a police dog and faces allegations that he assaulted five police officers Audi is now at home recovering and will be out of action for some time following the stabbing at 2.15pm on Monday.

DI Stephen Ward said: ‘We’re pleased that no officers came to serious harm and [police dog] Audi is now recovering from his ordeal.
