American idol 11th season runner up Jessica Sanchez is back to perform with an edgier look and a sound that is her own. Set to mount a self-titled concert at The Theater at Solaire on November 10, the Filipina-American who had this nation glued to “American Idol” in 2011 when she was 16 years old is very excited for another homecoming.

Born from Filipino immigrants the US, many believed her to be living the proverbial American dream when she made it to the world famous singing contest. Some argued, however, that she was too American to be celebrated by Filipinos, adding the fact that she had never set foot in the Philippines prior her Idol stint.

Apl de Ap of the popular group Black Eyed Peas who has made a dent in the once highly exclusive music industry, thereby opening doors for talents like her.

“It’s been harder in the past for Asian Americans to make a name in the industry, but I feel that now, it isn’t impossible.”

Now 23, Sanchez has kept the momentum going, but at her own pace.

“These past years have been filled with traveling internationally for events, concerts, and recordings, but I’ve also taken some time to step back and find myself as an artist,” she continued.

This and more is what she will showcase on her homecoming concert, with a repertoire of Filipino favorites such as “I Will Always Love You”, “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” and “I Have Nothing”, which she performed in Idol; then evolving into her bolder and grittier R&B sound.

"I was so excited and it all happened so fast, but I remember it being full of amazing food, amazing people and amazing moments,” she recalled.


In the years that followed, the Philippines saw her perform on local TV radio shows and a concert to promote her freshman album.

“I try to visit at least once a year. I’m half-Filipino so I’m always wanting to learn and experience more of the culture and perform here.”
