How to balance passion and profession

You don’t.

That’s according to human rights lawyer and UAAP commissioner Rene “Rebo” Saguisag Jr.

With this generation’s obsession with balancing everything in one hand all at the same time, Saguisag avers that to excel in two or more things, undivided attention must be given to each.

You don’t.

That’s according to human rights lawyer and UAAP commissioner Rene “Rebo” Saguisag Jr.

With this generation’s obsession with balancing everything in one hand all at the same time, Saguisag avers that to excel in two or more things, undivided attention must be given to each.

Law practice and basketball are two different worlds, for instance; they are both time-consuming and emotionally draining, thus managing them would require his whole attention—something that multi-taskers are reluctant to do.

“I don’t see it as an obstacle but a challenge and opportunity to better myself so I never even considered choosing one over the other,” shares Saguisag. “In fact, if handled properly, they can even complement each other.”

The lawyer-cum-UAAP commissioner says he learned this discipline while playing basketball when he was young and eventually while coaching young athletes at BEST (Basketball Efficiency & Scientific Training) Center, the pioneer of basketball clinics in the country.

He notes how the organization instilled in him discipline and a great sense of responsibility. The strict guidelines and high standards imposed and maintained in the clinics, and the proper behavior required in the court along with the values taught in team sports, have molded him to become who he is today.

“All I really needed to learn, I learned inside the basketball court,” says Saguisag.

Saguisag encourages everyone not to limit themselves to their own comfort zones, but instead be open to opportunities, accept challenges and turn these into achievements.

It also helps that you have people who support you. “I married the perfect wife who fills my shortcomings,” he beams.
