Powell River RCMP say they have arrested a 19-year-old man after two people were killed and another man was injured in an apparent shooting in Lund B.C.

Lund is about a 30-minute drive north of Powell River on B.C.'s Sunshine Coast.

"It's just a sad, sad day," said Powell River Mayor Dave Formosa, who co-owned the Lund Hotel for 16 years.

Around 5:15 a.m. PT Saturday, police say officers responded to a report from a residence in the 1500 block of Scotch Place that a person had been shot.

Once there, police discovered two deceased people and an injured male.

He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and has been released.

Police have arrested a 19-year-old male suspect. He remains in custody.

Victims are locals: mayor

Formosa, along with others from Lund, say the suspect and victims are locals, and people in the community are shocked at the crime.

"Two of our youth are dead, thank God a third was not harmed as bad," said Formosa.

Around 300 people live in the village.

Officers say the incident is not a random event and the public is not at risk.

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit has been called in to assist in the case.
