Ordinarily, a British woman wearing shorts in public would cause little need for fanfare or press. However, as a member of the royal family, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, is always subject to fanfare and press–and her first time wearing, yes, shorts in eight years is no exception. Kate wore the garment during this week’s inaugural regatta, the King’s Cup, in which she and husband Prince William raced each other in order to raise funds and awareness for eight different charities. Apparently, this is the first time that the duchess has worn shorts since becoming a royal, when she married the Duke of Cambridge in 2011. Since, Kate has attended public events wearing either long dresses or skirts and long pants or jeans. Royal protocol, and the queen's conservative leaning about revealing skin in public, has translated into Kate's hems usually meeting at or falling below her knees. The last time she was publicly seen wearing shorts was in 2008, while she attended the Day-Glo Midnight Roller Disco Charity Party in London. This aughties look was less athletic, and more fun and flirty, in which she paired neon yellow shorts with a sequined turquoise halter top. Maybe the Duchess of Cambridge should consider the bike shorts trend, next? ©HarpersBazaar
