Adamson University rose to solo third in the UAAP Season 82 Women's Basketball tournament after escaping Far Eastern University with a 61-59 win, Wednesday at Quadricentennial Pavilion.
National University manhandled University of the Philippines, 109-33, to stay at the top of the UAAP Season 82 Women's Basketball Tournament, Wednesday at Smart Araneta Coliseum to extend its historic win streak to 92 straight games.
University of Santo Tomas continued its Cinderella run, claiming the last Finals berth with a 4-3 walk-off victory against National University-Nazareth School during the knockout playoff in the UAAP Season 82 Juniors Baseball Tournament, Tuesday at Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
Upon deep review, University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Basketball Commissioner Jensen Ilagan has upgraded an act by University of the East student-athlete Nick Abanto last Sunday, October 20 from a non-call to an unsportsmanlike foul.
With him also being assessed an unsportsmanlike foul with 2:03 left in UE's game versus Ateneo, Abanto will be suspended during UE's game against Far Eastern University on Sunday, October 27.
The said act happened with 6:33 left in the opening frame of the game that saw Abanto swing his left arm towards the head of Ateneo's William Navarro during a rebounding battle.
LOS BANOS, LAGUNA -- University of Santo Tomas completed a magical run en route to winning both the boys and girls titles in UAAP Season 82 Swimming Championships, Sunday at Trace Aquatic Center here.
The Junior Tigersharks closed the four-day meet on top with 461.59 points for their third title in four years while the Junior Lady Tigersharks reclaim the plum after missing on it the previous season with 419.
"Overjoyed ang mga bata. Hindi namin ma-contain yung emotions," UST coach Agot Alcantara shared after the double-title run.
Charles Arceo bagged another gold to close out his season with a 2:27.62 mark in the 200-meter breaststroke, leading the run for UST on the final day. He then joined John Niel Paderes, Jules Merandilla, and Merrell Neri finish their championship season with a record-breaking time in the 400-meter medley relay with 4:03.78.
La Salle Zobel's Franco Dela Rosa took the golds in the 50-meter backstroke and 50-meter freestyle at 27.85 and 24.44, respectively, to pace last year's champions to a runner-up finish at 370.50 points.
Ateneo's Wacky Santos, on the other hand, bagged another Most Valuable Player award after sweeping his seven events, the last of which is a 2:09.98 swim in 200-meter butterfly. The Blue Eaglets went to take the third-place honors with 197 points.
Camille Buico also kept her top player award, capped by a new UAAP record of 2:24.04 in the 200-meter butterfly, breaking a three-year-old record of 2:25.30 of Suzanne Himor of Ateneo. She also topped the 50-meter freestyle with 27.74.
Franz Joves kept the 50-meter backstroke title with University of the Philippines after finishing at 31.95. The Junior Lady Maroons go up a notch with 297 points into second place, after missing the spot last year by just five points.
Last year's champion De La Salle-Zobel ended up at the podium in style with a new UAAP mark in the 400-meter medley relay with Raven Alcoseba, Ayena Calvario, Kayleen Keh, and Gene Quiambao at 4:40.42, also smashing a 2016 record. Bela Magtibay earlier in the day defended her 200-meter breaststroke gold at 2:48.02.
The Junior Lady Tankers produced 277 points this season.
UST's Robin Seranillo and UP's Aubrey Tom were hailed as the Rookies of the Year.
With this, Alcantara hopes that this is just the start of a UST dynasty in UAAP swimming.
"Hindi porket ikaw yung nag-champion, mag-rerelax ka na. Next week pa lang, dapat paghandaan na yung susunod," he disclosed.
This is UST's eighth championship in the boys' division while racking up their 11th for the distaff's side.PR
LOS BAÑOS, LAGUNA – University of the Philippines may have won the day but Ateneo remained poised to win their third straight title after Day 3 of the UAAP Season 82 Swimming Championships, Saturday at Trace Aquatic Center here.
The Lady Maroons tallied 137 points for the day, seven more than the Lady Eagles. Still, Ateneo remained in the lead with 343 points while UP was still a distant second with 293.
Riding on the UAAP record-breaking performance of UP’s Janna Taguibao, Alyssa Pogiongko, Ariana Canaya, and Angela Villamil in the 200m Freestyle Relay, the Lady Maroons ended Day 3 on a high note. The team broke a six-year-old record held by Ateneo (1:54.09) with their time of 1:53.19. Ateneo only managed a time of 1:54.47 to finish second while UST was a distant third in 1:58.26.
UP’s Rookie Erin Castrillo also bagged two gold medals in 50m Butterfly and 100m Backstroke. Her 50m Butterfly time of 28.19 seconds was simply too much for the rest of the field with teammate Cindy Fernandez coming in second at 29.56 seconds and Ateneo’s Kristine Santos coming in third at 30.16 seconds.
Castrillo then faced Rookie-of-the-Year rival Nikki Pamintuan of La Salle in the 100m Backstroke where she prevailed in 1:06.32 against Pamintuan’s 1:06.99. With this win, Castrillo now leads Pamintuan by a mere two points in the Rookie-of-the-Year race. Another rookie in UP’s Chesca Joves took the bronze with her time of 1:08.55
Most Valuable Player race leader Chloe Daos of Ateneo stayed unblemished collecting two more gold medals in 200m Freestyle and 400m Individual Medley. She swam 2:11.86 for the gold medal in the 200m Freestyle where teammate Andrea Ngui notched the silver in 2:15.64 while UP’s Nadine Tee Ten took the bronze in 2:16.16.
To end her day, Daos also surprisingly swam the 400m Individual Medley where her 5:11.58 time was able to keep Pamintuan (5:14.07) at bay. Ateneo’s super-senior Raegan Gavino rounded out the podium in 5:20.72.
Aiding Daos in carrying the Lady Eagles is their own super-rookie Rona Lalimo who collected her second gold medal of the season in the 100m Breaststroke. Lalimo swam to a 1:19.64 finish ahead of La Salle’s Nichole Evangelista (1:20.20) and teammate Jazmin Chua (1:20.30).
La Salle is at third with 165 points while UST sits at fourth with 74.
The final day of UAAP Swimming action concludes with the 50m Backstroke, 200m Butterfly, 200m Breaststroke, 50m Freestyle and 400m Medley Relay.
ANTIPOLO -- Ateneo weathered the storm and blanked University of the East late to take the 81-70 overtime victory in the UAAP Season 82 Women's Basketball Tournament, Sunday at Ynares Center here.
Alyssa Villamor came up big, dropping six of her 13 points in the extension as the Lady Eagles snapped their four-game losing skid.
"I like how our seniors fought back. Villamor didn't play much in the fourth quarter, but when she came back, she used that opportunity to show why she's a starter throughout this season," said coach Kat Quimpo.
Hazelle Yam paced Ateneo with 19 points, eight rebounds, five assists, five steals, and a block, while Pam Payac also stepped up with her 15 points, three boards, and two assists off the bench.
Zoe Chu added 11 points, five rebounds, and three steals, while Kat Guytingco braved through a cut on her left knee to pour 10 points and five boards in the win.
Leading 59-52 with 5:35 remaining in regulation, Ateneo allowed UE to fight back with a 12-0 blitz to grab a 64-59 advantage with 2:08 to play.
But the Lady Eagles were quick to respond, getting back as Yam knotted the game at 67 with a split from the line with 26.4 ticks left. Jhaz Joson forced a stop, drawing an offensive foul on Jearzy Ganade, but Guytingco wasn't able to score the winner as the game went to overtime.
Ateneo rode that momentum in the extra frame, scoring the first eight points as it outscored UE, 14-3 in those last five minutes.
"I like how the players fought until the end, especially in overtime," said Quimpo. "It's good to know that we still have fighters heading to the next season."
At 4-8, Ateneo is still in the Final Four race, although an Adamson win over UP, which is being played as of press time, would boot it out of contention.
It was a bitter defeat for UE, which suffered its seventh straight loss to stay at the cellar at 1-11.
Tin Cortizano led the Lady Warriors with a double-double of 17 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists, as Joyce Terrinal got 15 points, six boards, and two steals.

ANTIPOLO -- Far Eastern University decimated La Salle, 81-60, to ascend to fourth place Saturday in the UAAP Season 82 Men's Basketball Tournament at Ynares Center here.
L-Jay Gonzales was magnificent all game long with his 14 points, seven assists, six rebounds, and two steals to steer the Tamaraws to the victory.
Ken Tuffin also heated up from distance with his 4-of-6 clip to wound up with 14 points and five rebounds.
"We needed this win badly," said coach Olsen Racela, as FEU evened its standing to 6-6.
The sense of urgency was in full display for the Tamaraws, starting off hot with a 27-11 first quarter and kept the pressure on the Green Archers, enjoying leads as high as 22 points in the second half.
It didn't hurt that FEU shot a blistering 54-percent shooting from the field and dished out 19 assists in the game.
"Our mentality was to treat this game as a do-or-die. Ganoon ang aming sense of urgency, to play possession-by-possession and not worry how well we did or how bad we did after one possession but move on to the next," said Racela.
Wendell Comboy got 12 points, seven boards, and two assists, Xyrus Torres buried three three-pointers to collect 11 points, and Alec Stockton had seven points, five assists, and two rebounds.
It was a bitter defeat for La Salle as it slid down to fifth with its 5-6 slate.
Justine Baltazar topped the Green Archers with 16 points, nine rebounds, and two assists in the losing cause.
