Royal Tern edged Secret Spices, 102-100, at the Aquinas Gym in San Juan at the opening of the MBL Chairman’s Cup Basketball Tournament, now on its 15th year.

Secret Spices player Sydney Tolentino, who is a UP Varsity Team B player, missed what could have been a game winning three-point shot with 6 seconds left with Royal Tern just ahead by 2 points following a missed free throw by Erwin Sta Maria.Tolentino’s shot rimmed out as the clock ran out, allowing Royal Tern to score its first win in the four-team tournament backed by sportsman-businessman Alex Wang.Former UP Maroon Edrick Ferrer led Royal Tern with 19 points and got scoring support from teammates Rey La Madrid (17 points), Tabs Alon (14 points), Chinito  Bondoc (11 points) and PBA draftee Anthony Cuevas (11 points), while the losing Food Specialists were led by Cris Joson (33 points) and Tolentino (22 points).

 

The defending champion Couriers plays Aquadys, led by former PBA cager Buboy Rodriguez. PBA scoring legend Ato Tolentino heads the organizing committee of the tournament  also supported by Union Bank-Boni and Chinabank.The tournament  holds its finals on Dec. 18, coinciding with the MBL Christmas Party hosted by Wang.
