Pumanaw na si former senator Maria Teresa Aquino-Oreta, kapatid ng yumaong senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., ayon sa kanyang anak na si Malabon Mayor Antolin "Len Len" A. Oreta lll, Biyernes. Siya ay 75.
"On behalf of my family, it is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my mom at 10:48 p.m. of May 14. Former Senator Tessie Aquino-Oreta was a public servant who devoted her life to the country and her adopted hometown of Malabon," ani mayor sa kanyang Facebook post.
"She was a loving grandmother, mother, and wife and a friend to those whose lives she touched."
Ipinanganak noong June 28, 1944, si Aquino-Oreta ay naging chairperson ng Senate Committee on Education, Arts and Culture sa 11th Congress.
Nagtapos siya sa kanyang primary school sa College of Holy Spirit sa Mendiola at high school sa Assumption College. Kumuha siya ng kursong Literature at history sa Assumption Convent at tinanggap niya ang kanyang International Studies degree sa Cuidad Ducal, Avila, Spain. Naging Lieutenant Colonel (Reserved) sa Philippine Air Force matapos ang Master’s Degree sa National Security Administration buhat sa National Defense College of the Philippines.
Bago nahalal sa Senate taong 1998, kinatawan niya ang district of Malabon City-Navotas sa Kamara sa loob ng tatlong magkasunod na termino mula 1987-1998.
Sa 2000 impeachment trial ni former president Joseph Estrada, bomoto siya laban sa pagbubukas ng ikalawang sobre na umano'y naglalaman ng mga impormasyob kontra Estrada. Sa huli, napatalsik si Estrada bilang pangulo sa apat na araw na bloodless revolt. ( Louis Pangilinan )
