Where to stay in Tacloban

Emerging from the shadows of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), Tacloban has become a symbol of Filipinos’ undying resilience and hope.

As a way of celebrating Tacloban’s strength against all odds and as a way of giving back, Summit Hotels opens a new property in the heart of the city. Summit Hotel Tacloban is the fifth property in the province under the Summit Hotels brand. It serves as a physical representation of the beauty that remains within and around the city.

Eastern Visayas’ distinct beauty is best reflected in the hotel’s well-appointed interiors which take inspiration from the region’s colorful history and lush environment. As you enter the hotel, you’ll be greeted by wooden arches symbolizing Tacloban as the gateway to the region, as well as bursts of colors that symbolize the vibrancy of Filipino culture. The area is dotted with basket weave and coconut leaf patterns.

This tropical Filipino look is just as apparent in the hotel’s 138 rooms, which made  use of design concepts and finishes that are unique to the region.

Super Rooms feature native woodwork patterns to mimic the bamboo flooring of the traditional bahay kubo. Six guest suites are inspired by three major celebrations in the region: Sangyaw rooms, from the Sangyaw Festival, which is devoted to the Sto. Niño, feature bold floral patterns and metallic accents; Lubi-Lubi rooms, from the lubi-lubi (coconut dance) street parade that serves as a commemoration of peace, love, and unity among barangays, consist of bold leaf patterns and a variety of textures and colors. Lastly, Pintados rooms, from the Pintados Festival that celebrates the first inhabitants of Visayas, are filled with modernized symbolic tattoo patterns.

All rooms as well as the communal spaces are furnished with mid-century modern pieces to balance out the traditional design elements, giving the hotel that luxurious and contemporary feel mixed with a warm and welcoming vibe.

This vibe  also extends to the pool deck and bar as well as to the in-house restaurant, Patron Casual Dinining, which is adorned with tree patterns and beehive tiles, and will serve a predominantly Asian cuisine using fresh ingredients from local suppliers.

Only one and a half hour of plane ride away from Metro Manila, Summit Hotel Tacloban stands beside Robinsons Place Tacloban in Marasbaras. Its strategic location allows visitors to explore the areas beyond the city walls.

It also provides opportunities for its guests to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of Tacloban City, with various dining options, interesting attractions, and lively festivals all conveniently located within reach.

Visitors can enjoy cultural places like the Sto. Niño Shrine and Heritage Museum as well as the MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park. Adventurers may schedule a day of hiking at the scenic Calvary Hill in Siren District or explore the Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park. Burgos Street isn’t to be missed either for the plenty of restaurants and bars it houses.

Of course, no trip to Tacloban would be complete without trying the delicious delicacies like chocolate moron and binagol, and visiting all the memorial sites dedicated to the innocent souls lost during Typhoon Haiyan.
