The Society of Philippine Entertainment Editors (SPEEd) will announce the nominations for the first Eddys, the awards for films the group of editors will hand out for the first time in local entertainment.

To hand awards to deserving craftsmen, actors, writers, and directors is one of SPEED’s major thrust when it was formed in 2015.

SPEED is made up of entertainment editors of newspapers circulated daily nationwide. Currently, this writer is the president and the members (and officers) include Jojo Panaligan, Manila Bulletin as First Vice President, Eugene Asis (People’s Journal, Second Vice President), Ian Fariñas (People’s Tonight, Secretary), Gie Trillana (Malaya Business Insight, Asst. Secretary), Salve Asis (Pilipino Star Ngayon and Pang-Masa, Treasurer), Maricar Nicasio (Hataw. Asst. Treasurer), Dindo Balares (Balita) and Dinah. S. Ventura (Daily Tribune) are the auditors, the public relations officers are Dondon Sermino (Abante) and Tessa Mauricio (Manila Times). The rest of the members are Rito Asilo (Philippine Daily Inquirer), Jerry Olea (Abante Tonite), Rohn Romula (People’s Balita), Ervin Santiago, (Bandera) and Nestor Cuartero (Tempo) who acts as adviser to the group.

On July 9, the non-stock, non-profit organization of entertainment editors from the country’s top dailies will hold the first Entertainment Editors’ Award for Movies at the Kia Theater. It will be telecast later on ABS-CBN on the same day.

Dubbed “The Eddys,” it is the group’s way of encouraging Filipino filmmakers, producers, writers, actors and other allied artists in the Philippine movie industry to continue pursuing their passion of creating films that mirror the realities of our society.

“Given our collective experience and many decades of chronicling the careers, artistic processes and success or failure of actors, directors, producers and other players in the Philippine movie industry, we felt that we are in a distinctive position to hand out sound and sincere recognition of the best in filmmaking of the past year, and eventually inspire everyone in the industry to take pride in their craft and continue to enrich the Filipino talent,” I say and add, “We humbly state that in our case, we are doing this solely because of the love we have all come to develop for the Philippine entertainment industry in the course of our respective careers as journalists. We are all fans of the Filipino talent and this is our way of giving it due recognition and support.”

The announcement of the nominations will be held at the 38Valencia.
