The Vancouver Police Department says around 4:30 p.m. PT officers encountered a distraught male in his early 30s , who they say confronted them with a weapon.

A release from VPD says officers tried to negotiate with the man and use "less-lethal options" to disarm him.

The suspect was ultimately shot however and then rushed to hospital.

The VPD says he is in critical condition, while no officers were physically injured.
