Manila---Grandmaster Daniel Quizon reigned supreme in the 13th edition of the Kamatyas Rapid Open Chess Tournament dubbed "Blast of Mind Power" held at the ICON Isabela Convention Center, Cauayan City, Isabela on Saturday, November 2, 2024.
Quizon won the P30,000 top prize of the rapid tilt organized by International Master Roderick Nava and National Master David Almirol Jr. of Kamatyas Chess Club after registering the highest output of 8.5 points.
Quizon defeated Blair Ellizar Caluya in the first round, Saeson Myel Alejo in the second round, Roberto Mina in the third round, Melchor Foronda III in the fourth round, Alexis Emil Maribao in the fifth round, Lordwin Espiritu in the sixth round, Kevin Mirano in the seventh round and Rico Sales in the eighth round.
He drew with Mc Dominique Lagula in the ninth and final round.
"Iam so happy for winning this tough tournament," said Quizon who is set to defend his title at the 3rd Governor Henry S. Oaminal Open Chess Festival on Nov. 4-5 to be held at the Asenso Misamis Occidental Sports and Cultural Center, Capitol Complex in Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental.
Samson Chhiu Chhin Lim finished second with 8 points, while Lagula, Anwar Cabugatan, Kevin Arquero and Jake Tumaliuan finished third through sixth with 7.5 points each.
Lim received P10,000, while Lagula, Cabugatan, Arquero and Tumaliuan got P7,000, P5,000, P2,000 and P2,000 for finishing third, fourth, fifth and sixth respectively .
The top 10 finishers with 7.0 points each are Espiritu, Mirano, Maribao and Sales.-Marlon Bernardino-
