MANILA---Bannered by International Master Angelo Abundo Young, Calamba Champion Richie Jocson and former LCBA Stalwart Spencer Real, the Laguna Chess Team leads the early entries in the 1st South Luzon Chess Team Tournament slated on October 22, 2023 at Waltermart, Balibago, Sta, Rosa City, Laguna.


" I hope to do well in this event," said Young, an 8-time Illinois USA Champion, who is fresh from winning the Grandparents Day Celebration Open Rapid Chess Tournament dubbed as Dear Lola, Lolo and Apo held last September 9, 2023 at the Araneta Center, Farmers Plaza, Cubao, Quezon City.


Other strong contenders include Philippine Army-Cabuyao City led by NM Vince Angelo Medina, Kevin Arquero and Paul Sanchez, IIEE Team powered by Engr. Julian Paul Querubin, Engr. Ronald Donasco and Engr. Eric Frigillana, Siniloan Chess Team formed by UE Coach John Perzeus Orozco, Lee Roi Palma and Mark Gerald Reyes, Calamaniugan -Larry Dumadag Team A composed of Harrison Maamo, Jon Christian Lesaca, and Jerry Areque, Calmaniugan-Larry Dumadag Team B guided by NM Noel de la Cruz, Ricardo Jimenez and John Lee Antonio, Calamniugan-Larry Dumadag Team C of NM Carlo Rosaupan, Ruther Barredo and Jonathan Docot, Mapua Malayan Colleges of Laguna headed by Cabuyao top Junior player Rey Julius Taguba, Vincent Avisa and Mark Justine Britanico, King’s Gambit Online School manned by FM Randy Segarra, Richard Villaseran and Jeremy Marticio,  and Marinduque ChessTeam of Richard Pelaez, Aldrin Nazareno and Ronelo Lagra.  More than 50 teams from National Capital Region, Northern Luzon and Southern Luzon are expected to join.


Open to all provinces, cities, municipalities, companies, schools, associations and clubs with chess teams composed of 3 players with an average FIDE rapid rating of 1950, it offers P30,000 to the champion team, P20,000 to the 1st runner-up team and P15,000 to the 2nd runner-up team. Every team is allowed to field a master (GM, WGM, IM, WIM, FM, WFM, NM, WNM) in the top board.
Organized by the Rotary Club of Nuvali (RCN) and Philippine Executive Chess Association, the proceeds of the event will go to the “Bright Eyes, Bright Future project of the RCN in Pulong Sta, Cruz Elementary School which aims to provide free eyeglasses to the students with eyesight disorders.
