National Master Cesar Caturla won the first gold medal for the Philippines in the 20th Asean + Age Group Chess Championships 2019 at the Golden Mandalay Hotel and Hotel Hazel in Mandalay City, Myanmar on Saturday.

Caturla, a member of the Philippine Chess Team in the 22nd Chess Olympiad, held in Haifa, Israel in 1976 was undefeated in eight games, good enough to secure the top honors in the Senior 65 years old and above of the Standard Nine Round Swiss Tournament.

GRANDMASTER Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. downed Fide Master David Elorta,4-3, to win their match-up in the Rapid Chess Face Off on Saturday at the third floor League One Southgate Mall (formerly Alphaland Southgate Mall), near MRT Magallanes Station, Edsa, Makati City.

Actually the 13-times national open champion Antonio took a 3.5-0.5 commanding lead before Elorta rally and close the gap at 3-5-2.5. Antonio held Elorta into a fighting draw to win the match at 4-3 count.

His other achievements are 2nd place in the 1st kiddies tournament of Golden Moves Chess Club, 4th place in the National Age Group Grand Finals and 5th place in the National Youth &School Championship Luzon leg.

PH chess genius Al-Basher "Basty" Buto tries to sneak into the top 5 when it tangles with Vietnamese Phan Tran Bao Khang in the seventh round of the 20th Asean + Age Group Chess Championships 2019 at the Golden Mandalay Hotel and Hotel Hazel in Mandalay City, Myanmar on Saturday.

The grade 4 pupil of Faith Christian School in Cainta, Rizal was beaten by Candidate Master Pham Tran Gia Phuc of Vietnam in Round 6 in the Under-10 Boys' open division on Thursday.With the setback, Al-Basher remains at 3.5 points, two points behind with sole leader Nguyen Thai Son of Vietnam.

JEREMY MARTICIO, a grade 8 pupil of Pulo National High School in Cabuyao City, Laguna dominated the Fide-Rated 2nd Meralco Youth Rapid Chess tourney last Sunday, June 9 at the Multi-Purpose hall, Meralco compound, Ortigas Avenue, Pasig City.

The 13-years-old Jeremy, whose stint here is being supported by Mayor Mel Gecolea, Dr. Fred Paez, Jolly Smile Dental Clinic and Cabuyao City Chess Club, collected 7.5 points on seven wins and one draw to enroute the Under 14 kiddies chess crown plus the top purse of P4,000 and a trophy.
