THE Creamline Cool Smashers, led by the irrepressible Alyssa Valdez, barely missed the championship round of the Philippine Volleyball League Open Conference just a few weeks ago.

They improved exponentially this conference with the addition of former Ateneo De Manila University (also a former teammate of Valdez) setter Jia Morado as well as libero Angela Nunag.

IN A bid to come up with a better finish in the 29th Southeast Asian Games, the Larong Volleyball sa Pilpinas, Inc. will be sending its men’s and women’s teams to separate trainings abroad.

LVPI acting president Peter Cayco yesterday announced that the men’s national team will be flying to Seoul in South Korea on July 20, while the women’s national team will be going to Okayama City and Kobe in Japan on July 17 in preparation for the SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.

POCARI Sweat hopes to draw added firepower from import replacement Krystal Rivers as it clashes with BaliPure at the start of their Premier Volleyball League Finals at the Philsports Arena in Pasig tonight.

The American opposite spiker actually secured her ITC (International Transfer Certificate) last Thursday but the Lady Warriors opted to sit her out and went on to beat the Power Smashers, 25-19, 25-22, 25-21, to seal a title duel with the Water Defenders, who also eased out the Creamline Cool Smashers via the fashion, 25-18, 25-13, 25-16.

AKARI and Hapee Toothpaste have signed up for the Premier Volleyball League, making it an eight-team cast when it holds the Open Conference beginning July 1 at the San Juan Arena.

Akari, the top lighting and technology firm, is linking up with Adamson while Hapee will be backstopped by aces from the University of the Philippines when they make their respective debuts in the country’s premier women’s volley league.

The Lady Warriors checked an impending skid and escaped with a 25-23, 25-19, 23-25, 22-25, 15-12 victory over the Power Smashers in the opener of their best-of-three semifinal series last Saturday, keeping them on track of keeping the first of two of championships they won in their maiden stint in the league last year.
