Report: McGregor only wants title fight vs Alvarez aiming for UFC 205

After winning his title from Jose Aldo, UFC featherweight Conor McGregor already had a shot at making MMA history when he was slated to fight then-lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196. As we all remember, that was not to be after dos Anjos had to pull out of the fight due to a foot injury. All of this led to Nate Diaz becoming the late replacement and the birth of a rivalry nobody saw coming.

After being sidetracked from his initial ambition of becoming a two-division champion, sources close to McGregor still want to get a spot on the UFC 205 card at Madison Square Garden, against none other than current lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez, as per Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting.

This report is something of a surprise, seeing as a report on this week on UFC Tonight claimed that McGregor was healing from a leg injury.

The report stated that McGregor was nursing a leg injury, however, sources say McGregor is healthy and already training. The only fight that interests the featherweight champion at this time, though, is a fight against Alvarez for the 155-pound title. Alvarez also wants to fight McGregor at UFC 205, but he hasn't been offered the fight.

Instead, Alvarez has been offered a fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov for later this year, but it is unclear whether that fight will come to fruition at this time.”

For a first-time event in the most famous combat sports arena on Earth, the card could certainly use a massive booster like McGregor vs Alvarez as a headlining bout. While some fights such as Frankie Edgar vs Jeremy Stephens and Donald Cerrone vs Kelvin Gastelum have been made official and former middleweight champion Chris Weidman was announcd to be fighting Cuban Olympian phenom Yoel Romero, there has not been a main event announced.

Should this fight take place, it would be the second title fight on the card as the welterweight title will also be on the line in a bout between Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson.

UFC 205 takes place on November 12th live from Madison Square Garden in New York City, NY.
