Dana White is interested in having basically a mini 4-man lightweight tournament next.

Shortly after the TUF 28 Finale ended, Dana White spoke to the media about the status Conor McGregor. He again dispelled rumors of a potential bout with Donald Cerrone, and instead suggested a different option. He wants what would basically be a 4-man lightweight tournament next.

“The ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone fight has never, ever been discussed,” White told the assembled media. (HT: MMA Fighting) “That’s completely not true. I said the fight that makes sense right now is probably Poirier.

“Then Tony gets a shot at the title and the two winners fight each other. But I’m not sure exactly on a date when Conor is gonna fight yet. We have to get through this Nevada State Athletic Commission stuff first.”

Poirier has since taken to social media following White’s statements, referencing McGregor’s “red panty night” comments.

McGregor and Khabib are yet to be sanctioned by the NAC after their post-fight brawl at UFC 229. Their hearing is set for December 10th, so we should have a clearer idea on when the two will be eligible to compete soon enough.

Poirier and McGregor originally fought at UFC 178 back in 2014, with the Irishman winning by first round knockout. McGregor stayed at featherweight for three more fights after, while Poirier immediately moved up to 155 lbs, where he has had better success.

“The Diamond” has gone 8-1 (1 NC) since moving up to lightweight. He is unbeaten in his last five fights, and has had quality TKO wins over former champs and contenders like Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje and Anthony Pettis.
