Tony Ferguson: Conor McGregor ‘would easily break in a few rounds’ against me in boxing or MMA

Former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson explains in one tweet why he’d be too much for Conor McGregor, whether it’s in the cage or in the boxing ring.

UFC 229 will be best remembered for Khabib Nurmagomedov’s neck crank win over Conor McGregor, followed by the subsequent brawl that leaves both men subject to the Nevada Athletic Commission punishing them in December. Somewhat lost in the shuffle was the thrilling co-main event between Tony Ferguson and Anthony Pettis, which saw Ferguson rally from an early knockdown in round 2 to eventually overwhelm Pettis and get the TKO win after Duke Roufus opted to not let Pettis continue with his broken hand.

Ferguson has won his last eleven fights, and the former interim lightweight champion surely wants his next bout to be against Khabib. After all, this matchup has been scheduled about 750 times before, only for 750 different things to result in the bout’s cancellation. In the meantime, “El Cucuy” has been busy on Twitter, and he believes there are two major reasons why he’d be able to beat Conor McGregor in boxing or MMA.

“I feel I do my best against ‘Southpaws,’” Ferguson tweeted (in case you can’t view the tweet for some reason). “Most of my finishes are against them with style points. I feel if I were to fight [Conor McGregor] in a cage or boxing match my ‘athleticism’ and ‘conditioning’ would be too much for the Irishman & he would easily break in a few rounds.”

Whatever you feel about how Ferguson and McGregor compare inside the Octagon — let’s just ignore the boxing silliness — Ferguson is certainly a cardio freak, as evidenced by his insane output through five full rounds against Rafael dos Anjos in Mexico City a couple of years ago. Perhaps we may yet see Tony and Conor cross paths in the UFC down the line, and it’d certainly provide all sorts of entertainment for however long the fight lasts.
