As expected, Daniel Cormier is still the UFC heavyweight champion after submitting Derrick Lewis in the UFC 230 main event.

In the main event of UFC 230, two-division champion Daniel Cormier defended his heavyweight title in unsurprisingly dominant fashion, as he took down fan-favorite Derrick Lewis several times, with the last one leading to a rear-naked choke finish in round two. Lewis was always a massive underdog, and that miracle KO did not come to fruition, as the gulf in skill was just way too wide. If things break his way, then next up is a showdown with Brock Lesnar in 2019, of which March 20th (his 40th birthday) will be his planned retirement date.

Lewis threw the first strike, landing a switch kick to the body. Then he landed a leg kick. Cormier threw a lead left hook and took Lewis down less than a minute into the fight. Cormier threw some shots from half guard, and then Lewis was back to his feet in typical “Black Beast” fashion. However, Cormier still had a hold of Lewis, and he easily took him down with another single leg. Cormier landed several ground strikes and nearly took the back. The champ fired off some hammerfists and right hands, busting Lewis up with under a minute left in the opening round.

In round two, Lewis was able to connect with a left hook and then tried a switch kick. Cormier evaded a two-punch combo, and hit a sick trip to put Lewis on the mat again. Lewis was back to his feet, but Cormier was here to take him to wrestling school, hitting whatever technique he wanted on him. This time, DC had Lewis’ back, and sunk in the fight-ending rear-naked choke.

Official result: Daniel Cormier def. Derrick Lewis by submission (rear-naked choke) at 2:14 of round 2 to remain the UFC heavyweight champion
