Conor McGregor would eventually like to fight Anderson Silva... and “The Spider” is fine with it.
Conor McGregor is focused on his UFC 229 showdown with lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, but beyond Saturday’s night mega-fight, McGregor has his eyes on going up multiple weight classes to take on legendary former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.
Evidently, the feeling is mutual between the Irish superstar and “The Spider.” Check out what he wrote on his Instagram page.
“It would be an honor to test myself with Conor McGregor,” Silva said (translation via MMA Fighting’s Guilherme Cruz). “He’s an unorthodox fighter and has proven he must be respected. Let’s make it happen.
“The UFC wants superfights, I’m sure fans from all over the world want to see this fight. Professionally, I believe it would be incredible to test my martial arts abilities with a fighter like Conor McGregor in a true superfight. He’s focused on fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov now, after this fight I’m ready for this challenge. When and where he wants.”
Silva (34-8, 1 NC) hasn’t fought since a February 2017 decision over Derek Brunson. The 43-year-old was recently handed a reduced USADA suspension after it was ruled that he took tainted supplements. His suspension runs until November 10th, meaning he’ll be eligible to compete on any UFC event after that date.
It’d certainly be a weird fight to make, but McGregor often seems to get what he wants, and maybe a presumptive move up to middleweight (or some sort of catchweight) isn’t as ludicrous as it sounds.
