GSP says he would be interested in dropping down to lightweight to fight the winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Conor McGregor.
Georges St-Pierre is currently touring Australia, and it’s where he has spoken about the next steps of his fighting career. According to the two-division champion, the UFC last offered him a bout with Nate Diaz for September, which he refused because of timing, and that it wouldn’t add to his legacy.
So what would interest GSP at this point? Apparently, the 37-year-old is eyeing lightweight debut and a chance to be a three-division world champion — if the UFC would allow it.
“The thing that excites me is what can improve my legacy,” St-Pierre told Submission Radio, before saying that bouts with Diaz or Silva gives him less to gain and more to lose. “I would be interested in (facing winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Conor McGregor). That’s a win-win situation, it’s a legacy upgrade, and it’s good money.
“It would be a big fight. However, I fought at 170, I relinquished the title. I fought at 185, I relinquished the title. I don’t think the UFC would let me fight for the title at 155,” he said with a laugh. “They will be afraid I would relinquish and leave the division in ruins again.
“It’s a frustrating situation. From my perspective, it’s a very winning situation. For the UFC, it’s a big risk for them.”
As for making the cut, St-Pierre says he has yet to try it, but he believes he can make the lightweight limit.
“I’m older. 155 — Khabib, I’ve met him, he’s actually bigger than me when he’s (in) off season. He’s a big guy,” he said. “In terms of size, he walks around 195. Right now, I’m less than 185. I’m 183. I’ve always been like that, my natural weight.
“155, I think I could make it. I’ve never tried it, I’m not a fan of a big weight cut, but are they going to let me do that? I don’t know,” he said. “We’ll see.”
As for a date for a return, St-Pierre says he is open to fighting at the end of the year. He was asked if he would want it to be in the upcoming November event in Madison Square Garden, specifically.
“November... yeah. There’s also Toronto in December.”
