Dustin Poirier took out Eddie Alvarez in the second round of the UFC Calgary main event.

The UFC’s #4 ranked lightweight Dustin Poirier just finished the #3 Eddie Alvarez with strikes in the highly anticipated UFC on FOX 30 main event in Calgary, Alberta. Their first fight ended in a no-contest, but this one had a decidedly different outcome. It’s Poirier’s third consecutive win, and he’s that much closer to a title shot after a thrilling performance against Alvarez, who suffered only the third KO/TKO loss of his illustrious career.

The pace of this rematch looked a lot like the pace sustained in the first round of their initial meeting, with each man respecting the other and working to find their timing and range. Alvarez landed a clean combo with about 90 seconds left in the first round, but then the fight returned to its controlled pace until the final ten seconds where they turned up a bit. The cutman took long to get into the cage and start working on Alvarez. Poirier jumped a guillotine early in the second fame, but Alvarez grabbed the fence resulting in a warning. Poirier jumped another guillotine, but Alvarez escaped that one too and then took top position. The dominant position was taken away from Alvarez as a result of a 12-6 elbow.

Poirier quickly rocked his foe with a knee that set up a crazy finishing sequence. Once Poirier smelled blood, he turned on the rocket boosters and threw everything at Alvarez. Being as tough as they come, Alvarez somehow stayed standing through the storm, until Poirier put the kicks and punches to the side and brought out the elbow. Once Alvarez hit the deck, the referee was right there to rescue him.
