Floyd Mayweather says both parties are happy with the announcement of the Conor McGregor fight.
He's already mega rich, but expect boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather to get a whole lot richer come August 26.
It was announced Wednesday that Mayweather, 40, was officially coming out of retirement to accept a boxing superfight against UFC lightweight champion and combat sport's fastest rising star, Conor McGregor.
Mayweather and McGregor have yet to meet face-to-face at a press conference (expect an announcement soon), but 'Money' told reporters at the 'All Eyez On Me' movie premiere that both parties are 'very happy' with the fight announcement.
“McGregor is a tough competitor. People all around the world demanded this fight so I had to give them what they wanted to see,” Mayweather told BSOTV (h/t Damon Martin of FOX Sports). “They asked for this fight. I was in retirement, but they wanted me back and I’m back.”
“Both parties are very happy. He’s very happy, I’m very happy and I can’t wait.”
McGregor's greatest weapon heading into this fight is his quick wit and sharp tongue, and Mayweather is expecting full-on psychological warfare from the 'The Notorious' and his fellow countrymen in the coming weeks.
“You’re supposed to stand behind your man," Mayweather said of the Irish fans. "Stand behind the fighter that you believe in. He’s a hell of a competitor.”
Mayweather was overwhelmed by the fan support for Manchester-based Ricky Hatton in 2007, who he knocked out in brutal fashion at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. But expect McGregor, 28, to have the full backing of Ireland behind him heading into August.
Mayweather vs. McGregor, which is set to be the biggest fight in combat sports history, will take place on August 26 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
