UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes is pleased with all the new divisions that have been added to the UFC.
Reigning UFC women’s bantamweight champion, Amanda Nunes, is happy to see the UFC expanding its women’s divisions. As she revealed to Combate, the more weight classes the UFC keeps on adding, the bigger the chances are for the first ever two-division women’s champ to come to surface. In Nunes' eyes, it'll be either herself or strawweight champion, Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
"I'm really glad that the UFC is embracing female MMA like that,” Nunes said. “I think this women’s flyweight division will be a huge success. It'll give another chance to girls who have a hard time dropping to strawweight, so it'll be good for them to fight at 125. And now we'll see who makes history first as the first two-division champion, me or Joanna Jedrzejczyk.”
Jedrzejczyk is coming off the fifth successive defense of her strawweight title, having beaten Jessica Andrade by unanimous decision at UFC 211. She also recently expressed interest in winning the women’s flyweight belt and being able to defend both at the same time.
Amanda Nunes is expected to defend her belt for the second time in a rematch against Valentina Shevchenko. She won their non-title first fight by unanimous decision in March 2016. The pair are scheduled to meet again in the co-main event of UFC 213, on July 8, in Las Vegas.
