Derek Brunson believes he was robbed at UFC 208, and he’s going to appeal the decision with the New York commission.
Derek Brunson has become the second fighter today to appeal a UFC 208 loss. After Holly Holm’s camp announced that they will be looking for the New York State Athletic Commission to review her loss to Germaine de Randamie, Derek Brunson will do the same in regards to his decision loss to Anderson Silva.
Fox Sports confirmed the news with Brunson’s manager, Ali Abdel-Aziz.
Brunson has been very outspoken since Silva was a handed a unanimous decision victory over him, with two 29-28 scores and one 30-27. He believes he won, citing striking stats and the wrestling advantage he showed off in the UFC 208 co-main event. UFC president Dana White thought Brunson won as well, though he made it clear that anything can happen if you let it go to the judges. Brunson also dropped a spot in the UFC rankings due to the loss.
It remains to be seen if the commission would consider overturning a decision based solely on what could be viewed as the incompetence of the judges. At least Holm’s appeal is based on the fact that she was hit after the bell multiple times. But this is MMA, and NYSAC has already done some strange things during the UFC’s short history in New York, so it’s at least possible that Brunson could come out on top here.
