The top of the UFC St. Petersburg main card saw the company’s #7 ranked heavyweight Alistair Overeem stop the #9 ranked Aleksei Oleinik with strikes in the opening round.

The victory did not come without adversity. Oleinik was more than game, hurting Overeem on the feet early and unloading some serious volume. Overeem showed off his heart to weather the storm that was Oleinik, and began to attack with knees from the clinch. He started with the body, and then switched to the head.

UFC welterweight Alan Jouban was hoping for a victory for his return to action after more than a year in the sidelines. Instead, what he got was a split decision loss against Dwight Grant in his main card fight at UFC 236 on Saturday night.

Jouban was convinced he had done enough to secure the win, which makes the verdict a lot more difficult to digest.

Khabib Nurmagomedov is eyeing an imminent fight against Dustin Poirier in September.

The UFC lightweight champion congratulated Poirier on his win at UFC 236 in a tweet early Sunday morning. Poirier defeated featherweight champ Max Holloway for the interim 155-pound title in an instant classic Saturday night in Atlanta.

Add Dominick Cruz to the small but growing number of fighters who aren’t willing to throw T.J. Dillashaw under the bus after his positive drug test for EPO.

Dillashaw, the former two-time bantamweight champion, voluntarily relinquished his title before the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) handed him a two year suspension (retroactive Jan. 19, 2019) earlier this month.

Once teammates, Cody Garbrandt and T.J. Dillashaw soon became fierce rivals, with Dillashaw twice getting the better of Cody in UFC men’s bantamweight title fights.

While Garbrandt is now on a three-fight losing streak, he’s somehow in a much better position than Dillashaw, who accepted a two-year USADA suspension after testing positive for EPO (recombinant human erythropoietin). Dillashaw relinquished his title — he was going to be stripped anyway — and of course he’s coming off a 32-second TKO loss to Henry Cejudo in an ill-fated attempt to become flyweight champion.
