With a guarantee deadline looming, the Atlanta Hawks will move on from Jaylen Adams. The news was first reported by Chris Vivlamore of the AJC on Saturday morning.

The second-year guard out of St. Bonaventure joined the Hawks on a two-way deal last summer before being elevated to the full roster in the wake of Jeremy Lin’s departure late in the year. Atlanta will pay out his $100,000 guarantee rather than fully guaranteeing his contract for more than $1.4 million for the upcoming season, a decision that was going to come due by July 19.

Adams did very little to help his cause during the Las Vegas Summer League, which ultimately led to him being let go by the club. He shot just 25 percent from the field across his four games and finished just barely over the 1.0 assist-to-turnover mark, committing 13 turnovers in the four contests, including seven in the team’s third game against Indiana.

During the 2018-19 regular season, the 23-year-old point guard appeared in 34 contests, making one start, and he averaged 3.2 points, 1.9 assists and 1.8 rebounds per contest. Adams is known for his outside shooting stroke but his marksmanship didn’t materialize against top-level competition (47.4 percent true shooting) and that, combined with his other limitations seemingly led to this decision.

The team will move forward with just one true point guard on the roster, though further moves will almost certainly be imminent. For now, the plan for the Hawks is to play Evan Turner at backup point guard after he was acquired in a trade with Portland earlier in the offseason, but the team has two open roster spots and could sign another guard who can provide cover as a third option behind Trae Young and Turner. Should that player also be able to shoot from distance, the team could play him with Turner on backup units, but minutes will be hard to come by on a relatively deep Atlanta roster.

Stay tuned.
