The Golden State Warriors selected three players in the 2019 NBA Draft, but they weren’t done there. After the draft concluded, the Warriors jumped into the mass of teams jockeying to sign the best undrafted players.
Golden State emerged with one of the most sought after prospects, Boston College guard Ky Bowman, who signed with the team on a one-year contract.
Bowman is a fascinating player. He was initially projected to be a draft pick, but informed teams that he was unwilling to sign a two-way contract, which many second-round selections have to do. Instead, he bet on free agency and the opportunity to earn a one-year contract.
As a junior at Boston College, Bowman averaged 19.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.4 steals per game, while shooting 37.4% from three-point range. He finished his three-year college career with a 38.8% clip from deep.
The conditions of Bowman’s contract are unclear. The Warriors only have five players under guaranteed contracts for next year (Steph Curry, Draymond Green, Andre Iguodala, Damian Jones, and Jacob Evans III), plus their three draft picks (two of which could be two-way contracts).
With so many spots to fill, Golden State could have offered Bowman a guaranteed contract if they felt it was necessary. It’s more likely that they offered him an Exhibit 10 contract, which is a non-guaranteed contract with a financial incentive to join the G League’s Santa Cruz Warriors if cut by Golden State. Or it could be a non-guaranteed contract with some healthy incentives. We’ll have to wait and see.
It was also reported that undrafted Kansas forward Dedric Lawson would be joining the Warriors Summer League team.
