Michael Jordan will be the subject of a new 10-hour documentary hitting Netflix in 2019. A co-production with ESPN, The Last Dance will focus on Jordan’s final championship run with the Chicago Bulls during the 1997-98 season.
The multi-part documentary is being directed by 30-for-30 veteran Jason Hehir, who directed The Fab Five, The ‘85 Bears and most-recently the acclaimed Andre The Giant for HBO. According to The Hollywood Reporter the documentary will have access to over 500 hours of previously unseen footage from the 97-98 season, as well as commentary from players and basketball figures of the time.
The 97-98 season was a fascinating year in the NBA where four team posted 60-plus win records, the Bulls weren’t at the peak of their power, but still managed to fend off the Jazz in a brutal six-game series that concluded with some questionable calls to give Chicago the title.
It remains to be seen how in depth the documentary will, and can go — especially considering that Jordan is connected with “Jump.23” listed as one of the producers, but the series is expected to hit Netflix next year.
