Klay’s 27 points leads Warriors to comeback win on the road versus San Antonio Spurs

The Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs opened their season series in San Antonio Thursday night with a 112-92 win.

The Spurs fed off of a frenzied crowd to jump out to an early lead behind Lamarcus Aldridge’s 11 first quarter points and a barrage of threes and tough offensive rebounds.

Turnovers, an early season nemesis for this Warriors team, once again hampered the Warriors offense. 5 turnovers in the first 6 minutes, combined with the Spurs’ dominance on the boards—15-9 edge in the first frame—saw the Spurs race out to a 31-12 lead with an 18-3 run midway through the quarter, and they led the Dubs 33-24 by the end of the first.

The second quarter featured a more defensively determined Warriors team. Active hands and solid rotations and rebounding stymied the Spurs’ hot shooting. With Kevin Durant struggling to score—1-for-9 in the first half—, and the Warriors being outplayed in every facet of the game, Klay Thompson and Steph Curry put the team on their backs and dragged the Dubs back into the game with a variety of tough jumpers. By the end of the half, the Warriors had cut the lead to 55-50 with Steph and Klay combining for 32 points.

The Warriors opened the second half with renewed energy and focus, going on a 20-10 run over the first five minutes, fueled by Draymond Green’s defense and Kevin Durant’s offense. The Golden State small forward, after missing his first 8 shots, made his next 6 in a row as the Warriors asserted themselves in a chippy third quarter. Both teams upped their physicality, but the frenetic pace favored the Warriors and they entered the fourth with the lead, 84-78.

The Warriors' resurgence on the boards and on defense continued to open the fourth as they slowly but surely put the Spurs behind them. With 5 minutes to go and his team down 12, a Popovich explosion saw him surprisingly ejected. Two threes from Pat McCaw helped build the lead up to 17, and with 3:30 left in the game both coaches emptied their benches. The Warriors would go on to win comfortably, 112-92, led by Klay’s 27 and Durant’s 24.
