Thomas was a key piece of the Kyrie Irving trade, and if his health isn’t up to par, the Cavaliers can void the deal.

The Cavaliers traded Kyrie Irving to the Celtics under the impression that Isaiah Thomas would pass his physical after a hip injury ended his playoffs early. But after taking that physical in Cleveland, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports the Cavaliers are still evaluating Thomas’s hip and weighing options with the completion of the trade.

All players are required to pass a physical after a trade, and Thomas — an All-Star coming off of a career season — is no different. If the Cavaliers are not satisfied with the outcome of Thomas’s physical, they can void the trade and deal Irving elsewhere.

Cleveland, however, also received heralded role player Jae Crowder, young promising center Ante Zizic and the Brooklyn Nets’ unprotected and potentially top-five pick in the loaded 2018 draft as part of the trade.

The Cavaliers consider this a “very sensitive situation,” according to Wojnarowski.

If Thomas is sent back to Boston, it wouldn’t be the first time a player has been shipped back after failing a physical.

The Rockets traded Donatas Motiejunas and Marcus Thornton to the Detroit Pistons in a three-team trade that sent a protected first-round pick to Houston. But Pistons GM and head coach Stan Van Gundy voided the trade after complications with Motiejunas’s physical that stemmed from a previous back injury.
