Nate Diaz believes he's every bit as business savvy as Conor McGregor. Diaz, like his older brother Nick, always seems to get what he wants, even when he's being a menace to the UFC heads.
The Stockton-born fighter has been arguing about his contract with the UFC for years, and Diaz' day of reckoning finally came when he was selected as a late replacement to take on McGregor at UFC 196.
Diaz, like Nick, has always maintained a cult-like following in the sport but broke into the mainstream when he submitted 'The Notorious' in a pay-per-view that is estimated to have rivalled UFC 100. The win was impressive, but perhaps more alluring was the Diaz-brother personality that shone through in the UFC 196 post-fight interview: 'I'm not surprised, mother f*ckers'.
Diaz' antics have secured mainstream appearances on the likes of Jimmy Kimmel and Conan, and the Californian firmly believes he would have achieved his goals with or without McGregor.
On Friday's UFC 202 conference call, Diaz unloaded on the rest of the UFC roster and said McGregor provided him with a shortcut to a big pay cheque.
"This guy talks about all these fighters like they're f*cking dumb, and he's right, they're all f*cking dumb," Diaz said, per Shaun-Al Shatti of MMA Fighting.
"I'm not one of those guys who sat around here f*cking taking contracts. I've been bitching about my contract for the last six years. I've been going through hell, so I knew I was going to get mine. When it was time to get mine, I was going to get what I was going to get regardless, and I had a plan to do it. It's not thanks to Conor that I got all of this, but I'm going to say that was a shortcut."
Diaz and McGregor will look to break more pay-per-view records when they collide at UFC 202. The highly anticipated rematch takes place August 20 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
