Dana White thinks Francis Ngannou could be UFC’s ‘next big thing’ — ‘literally and figuratively’

UFC president Dana White believes heavyweight Francis Ngannou is on a path to becoming a superstar.

When asked which fighter is on his radar to become the UFC’s next superstar, UFC president Dana White had one name in mind: Francis Ngannou.

Ngannou (10-1) has taken the MMA world by storm since making his Octagon debut at UFC on FOX 16 in December 2015. The 31-year-old currently holds a 5-0 UFC record with all finishes, and his biggest win is a first-round TKO over former heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski. Ngannou has gone from heavyweight prospect to contender in a short period of time, and White thinks Ngannou has what it takes to make waves beyond the hardcore audience.

“I like Francis Ngannou,” White told The TSN MMA Show last week. “I think Francis Ngannou can be the next big thing, literally and figuratively.”

Ngannou, who recently moved full time to Las Vegas, is a native of France, and his English is still improving. But White doesn’t think that will prevent Ngannou from attracting a larger crowd.

“When you’re a badass, language has nothing to do with it,” White said of Ngannou, who is fighting top contender Alistair Overeem in the UFC 218 co-main event in December. “Look at Anderson Silva. Georges St-Pierre. The list goes on and on. It’s about your performances.

“We think about the talking because (UFC lightweight champion) Conor (McGregor)’s so good. Conor’s a great fighter, and every time he opens his mouth it’s hilarious. But you find those guys once in a blue moon.”
